2018 CCS Service-Learning/PBL Workshop

This interactive graduate course is designed to help Columbus City Schools teachers more effectively integrate service-learning/PBL, 21st Century Skills, and career development to inspire a "sense of passion and purpose" in their students. This type of instruction enables young people to take charge of their learning and lives as they "create their legacies." This course was sponsored by Columbus City Schools and the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation.

2018 CCS Service-Learning/PBL Workshop Details

Service-learning is an instructional strategy that directly connects community service with the school curriculum, adding rigor, relevance, and relationships to the learning process and helping students actively address significant local/global needs. It is an especially engaging form of PBL—an instructional approach that enables students to “do the work of real people” by investigating important questions and solving authentic problems.

The 2018 CCS SL/PBL Workshop will meet 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (coffee, etc. available at 8:30 a.m.), on June 26 and 27. The August 7 session will meet 8:30 am to 11:30 am (coffee, etc. available at 8:00 am). Four optional follow-up sessions will be held—September 5, October 3, Nov. 7, and Dec. 5 (4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.) to ensure project continuity and support. All sessions will be held at The Graf Center (Upper Arlington Schools), 2020 Builders Place, Columbus, OH, 43204. Participants will have an option of 1-2 semester hours of graduate credit through Ashland University or CEUs.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"Thoroughly enjoyable. Passion of presenters drove the 3R’s (Rigor, Relevance, Relationships) through activities that help synthesize my learning of PBL and SLP [project-based learning and service-learning projects]. The time spent developing our understanding and creating an action plan for implementation was most helpful." -- Course participant
