7th Annual Barrington Elementary Habitat Day

Dear Friends,

We are excited to be hosting this year's Barrington Informal Annual Habitat Day on Thursday, October 2. This is an all-day event at Barrington (essentially an on-site field trip) where students in grades K-5 participate in workshops and interactive learning sessions. I believe this is our seventh year. Students look forward to this event each year!

This year's sessions focus on learning about natural remedies from plants and uses for pure essential oils, soil exploration with help from Carol Loopstra of the Franklin County Soil and Water District and our school librarian, Amy Byard; a nature-focused music and movement session with music teacher, Mrs. Gibson; learning about honeybees and the importance of this insect in our ecosystems; and using natural ingredients, like flower petals, to create things like perfume facilitated by retired UA teachers Gayle Dunn and Audrey Triotier. All these activities relate to nature and work at school with the Barrington Garden and Habitat. We have been in contact with representatives from the Mid-Ohio Food Bank as well and hope to explore various ways students and families can assist at produce markets as part of our service learning.

You are welcome to join us for a few minutes or for the entire day. We would love to share this authentic, hands-on day of learning with each of you. The workshops and activities take place between 8:30 a.m.-10:55 a.m. and again from 12:15 p.m.-2:10 p.m. A closing event for all students will be from 2:15-2:30 p.m. in the outdoor Barrington Habitat.

We also invite you to be our guest for lunch from 11:05-12:05 in Mrs. O'Brochta's and Mrs. Wilcox's rooms. Come for just lunch if that works in your schedule. A schedule with times, workshops, and rooms will be available in the Barrington Office on Thursday. If you can attend, please check in there, pick up a schedule, and stop in for any of the sessions throughout the day (or for lunch)!

If you have any questions, please let me know. We hope you can stop by at least for a bit! Thanks for supporting this unique educational opportunity.

6th Annual Habitat Day: Caring for Those in Our Community

Habitat Day has been a tradition of Barrington’s Informal Progressive Program for the past six years. Each year, students participate in a “field trip at school” that includes presentations, workshops, hands-on activities, arts integration, and service, all centered on our yearlong K-5 theme. This year it will be on Friday, October 25. It is a wonderful day of learning and serving, Habitat Day: Caring for Those in Our Community is a follow up to our visit to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank and connects to both our grade-level curriculums and Informal’s ongoing work with the Barrington Garden and Habitat. We will begin that day together in the Cafeteria. Groups will then attend the following sessions throughout the day:
• Quilting Community: One Stitch at a Time—Meet with Mrs. McGinty, district High School Art teacher, to learn about the Community Quilt being “woven” across U.A. Each class will create a quilt square that will be part of the quilt and displayed throughout the city and unveiled at the State of the City in January. The quilt squares will represent different places and themes of our community.
• Kid Packs—Work in groups to decorate and create KID PACKS for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. These kits are assembled with healthy items for a family of four. The packs are distributed by the Foodbank.
•Music and Movement—Create movements and write lyrics with Mrs. Gibson related to our theme.
•Veggie U--Nutrition & Healthy Eating—Learn about healthy eating choices and sample popcorn shoot, herbs, mixed potatoes and potatoes, beets, cauliflower, and celery. “Taste outside the box” and understand why food like mac and cheese and peanut butter aren’t enough!
•Budget Shopping Simulation—Work in groups with support from adults to “shop” at the grocery store on a limited budget of $4 per day, per family member; a family of 4 has $16 to spend. Kids will see what they can purchase on a limited budget and discuss if the amounts and choices available are adequate.

HERE'S HOW WE HELPED
We needed items for our Kid Packs. We asked students to bring in items based on grade level so we received all we needed to fill these packs. We asked for one item per child; more allowed us to create more Kid Packs. Please also see the attached page to order a shirt for your child to wear on Habitat Day. Profits from the shirts will support activities in our garden and habitat areas in the upcoming year.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"Thoroughly enjoyable. Passion of presenters drove the 3R’s (Rigor, Relevance, Relationships) through activities that help synthesize my learning of PBL and SLP [project-based learning and service-learning projects]. The time spent developing our understanding and creating an action plan for implementation was most helpful." -- Course participant
