UNIT 1
Introduction to “Designing the Future”

The Big Questions . . .
What’s this class about?
What will we be doing?
How can the class help me/us “create a legacy” and “design the future”?

Creating a Legacy

Picture
Introducing students to the concept of legacy serves two basic purposes. First, it helps students recognize what successful people do, how they behave, what they accomplish and what drives them to succeed—their sense of passion and purpose. Second, discussing these traits in role models more readily helps students recognize these same traits in themselves, thus helping students get in touch with their own legacies, which they are creating right now.

When Passion Meets Vision: The Ryan Hrljac Story

In 1998, six-year-old Ryan began raising money so kids across the world could have clean water. His foundation, Ryan's Well, has raised over $6 million to date. If you'd like to help change lives with Ryan's Well, click here.

Legacy Quilt

Picture
Each student designs a “quilt piece” using a sheet of construction paper. Everyone positions his/her sheet in the same direction—all horizontally, or all vertically. Each quilt piece should be a tribute to a role model selected by the group member. Together, the pieces will form a “legacy quilt.”

The Ryan's Well Foundation

The Ryan's Well Foundation was born out of the passion and courage of a 6 year old boy, Ryan Hreljac who was inspired to take action when he heard that people were dying without safe drinking water. Determined to make a diference Ryan rallied his parents, his friends and his community to raise funds to build a well. The rest is history. For more information go to. www.ryanswell.ca

What Our Clients Are Saying

"Thoroughly enjoyable. Passion of presenters drove the 3R’s (Rigor, Relevance, Relationships) through activities that help synthesize my learning of PBL and SLP [project-based learning and service-learning projects]. The time spent developing our understanding and creating an action plan for implementation was most helpful." -- Course participant
