UNIT 2
Role Models and Legacies

The Big Questions . . .
What “changemakers” do we admire?
What can we learn from them?
How have their gifts, strengths, passions, and actions contributed to their legacies?
What qualities of these “changemakers” do I see in myself?

How Are You Smart?

Picture
In his book, Frames of Mind, written in 1983, Howard Gardner defined intelligence much more broadly than math and verbal skills. He said it is the ability to solve problems, express our creativity and interact with the world in a variety of ways. Gardner’s work has demonstrated that many different gifts have been needed to “move the world forward.” Intelligence isn’t always about being able to read well or solve logic problems. Some people are “smart” at fixing cars, growing flowers or creating works of art.

Internal Compass

Picture
Each student designs a “quilt piece” using a sheet of construction paper. Everyone positions his/her sheet in the same direction—all horizontally, or all vertically. Each quilt piece should be a tribute to a role model selected by the group member. Together, the pieces will form a “legacy quilt.”

Verb List

Picture
The moral of the story is . . . you don’t choose your work--your work chooses you. You are carrying a job description inside you, and your memory has been storing up evidence of your internal job description. You can use the verb exercise as a way of beginning to read your own internal job description. Over time, you will find that your internal job description is neat and complete, waiting for you to come to it.

What Our Clients Are Saying

"Thoroughly enjoyable. Passion of presenters drove the 3R’s (Rigor, Relevance, Relationships) through activities that help synthesize my learning of PBL and SLP [project-based learning and service-learning projects]. The time spent developing our understanding and creating an action plan for implementation was most helpful." -- Course participant
